(Greenwood, SC, Jan. 29, 2013) – Self Regional Healthcare’s Cancer Center has achieved QOPI® Certification by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (http://www.asco.org). Self Regional is the first health system in the Lakelands to achieve QOPI certification, and one of just three certified practices in the state of South Carolina (http://qopi.asco.org/southregional).

The voluntary certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices recognizes quality cancer care based on practicing evidenced-based and consensus quality measures while meeting rigorous safety measures. To become certified, practices must undergo an evaluation of their entire practice and documentation standards, and meet core standards in all areas including:

  • Treatment planning
  • Staff training and education
  • Chemotherapy orders and drug preparation
  • Patient consent and education
  • Safe chemotherapy administration
  • Monitoring and assessment of patient well-being

“For our patients and their families, this certification demonstrates our commitment to adhering to the highest standards of clinical care, as recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology,” said Dr. Hunis, who also serves as director of Medical Oncology and an assistant clinical professor for the Medical University of South Carolina.

Self Regional treats nearly 700 cancer patients annually, with a majority undergoing chemotherapy or hematology treatments. In 2012, Self Regional announced a partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center to provide clinical trials to patients.
