Self Regional Healthcare Awards $400,000 of $1.3 Million In 2014 Grants
Six Local Organizations Have Received Support from Funds
(Greenwood, S.C., Feb. 4, 2014) – The Lakelands community is projected to receive $1.3 million in 2014 from grants funded by Self Regional Healthcare to help improve community health and wellness, announced David Bell, chairman of the Self Regional Community Outreach Committee and member of the Self Regional Healthcare Board of Trustees. In January, the committee awarded more than $400,000 of the $1.3 million to six local organizations.
“Having access to healthcare and helping our residents make healthier choices is critical for the health of our community,” said Bell. “The organizations receiving grants from Self Regional Healthcare are making a tremendous impact on the children and adults in our region, and we are proud to help them with their mission.”
The six organizations and the funding amount recently approved include:
- Free Medical Clinics in Greenwood, $170,000
- Beyond Abuse (Sexual Trauma and Counseling Center), $98,500
- Carolina Health Centers Nurse-Family Partnership, $45,000
- Presbyterian College’s School of Pharmacy, $63,000
- Healthy Learners, $50,000
- Healthy Greenwood Neighborhoods, $20,000
“As the community’s trusted health provider, we are committed to reinvesting in our health system and in our community,” said Bell. “By supporting our local hospital, we support initiatives for our residents to help improve their quality of life, and their health and well-being.”
Over the past five years (2009-2013), the Community Outreach Committee from Self Regional has awarded $1.8 million to various local organizations, according to Controller Robert McVicker.
Self Regional Healthcare employs about 2,000 team members and its services are available to more than 250,000 people in the Lakelands region. In 2013, the health system recorded more than 50,000 patients treated in its Emergency Care Center, more than 11,500 patients who were treated at the Medical Center and almost 200,000 outpatient visits and provided $34.4 million dollars in charity care.
“In our roles as an employer and as a health provider, we recognize that our patients are also our family, friends and neighbors who have chosen to put their trust in us,” said Jim Pfeiffer, Self Regional Healthcare President and CEO. “Giving back to our community is one way we say thank you for your support.”
The Self Regional Healthcare Community Outreach Committee has a mission to increase treatment, prevention and early detection of medical diseases that affect a significant number of area residents.
