(Greenwood, S.C., July 22, 2013) – The Self Regional Healthcare Foundation hosted its annual nursing scholarship luncheon in late June and awarded seven local students scholarships for a combined amount of $7,000.
The recipients for the 2013 Mary Ella Ruff Scholarships are Anna Baughman of Abbeville, S.C., Allie South of Cross Hill, S.C., Brandon Scott of Abbeville, S.C., Beth Yarborough of Laurens, S.C., and Mary Simmons of Clinton, S.C.
The Mary Ella Ruff Nursing scholarship was established in honor of one of Self Regional Healthcare’s most dedicated and influential nurses, Mary Ella Ruff, who retired in 1978 after 35 years of service. This scholarship is awarded to students who plan to enroll in a nursing program, students currently enrolled in a nursing program, or to practicing nurses in South Carolina. The total amount distributed for the Mary Ella Ruff Nursing Scholarship was $5,000 with each winner receiving $1,000
The recipients for the 2013 Charlotte Blackwell Memorial Nursing Scholarships are Brandon Scott of Abbeville, S.C. and April Payton of Hodges, S.C.
The Charlotte Blackwell Memorial Nursing Scholarship began in 2005 in memory of Charlotte Blackwell. Charlotte Blackwell was a young and devoted nurse who is noted as the Mary Ella Ruff of this generation. This scholarship is awarded to students who attend Lander University or Piedmont Technical College and who plan to have a nursing career at Self Regional Hospital. The total amount distributed for the Charlotte Blackwell Memorial Scholarship was $2,000 with each winner receiving $1,000.
The Self Regional Healthcare Foundation’s scholarship program is built on community campaigns and fundraising that ensures qualified and talented individuals have the opportunity to pursue a career in healthcare.
