Exercises for Patients During and After Treatment
The team at Self Regional Healthcare is here for you when you need them most. During and after your cancer treatment, we recommend staying active. Within the Transitional Rehabilitation Program, our team will walk you through certain exercises that focus on aerobic, strength training, balance and stretching.
Aerobic: Walking, NuStep, Seated Elliptical or Recumbent bicycle (low impact machines)
We may use, slam-balls, jump-rope, row machine and more depending on the patient’s abilities. (High-Impact)
Strength Training: Multi-use weight training machine – Working an upper/lower body program. Dumbbells and resistance bands, bicep curls, triceps extensions, some pictorial work (mindful of any port). Squats and lower extremity work for movement fortification.
Balance: We have a Barre located in our center and we take patients through balance work like; foot over foot movement, single-leg stabilization, BOSUball work, etc.
Stretching: Specific to the type of cancer and reduction of lymphedema
(Example: For breast cancer patients, we would focus on diaphragmatic breathing while maintaining posture and ROM through the arms and scapula)
Our team will also address exercises that are requested by the patient, as long as it is safe and helps with function.
(Example: If a patient who needed to get back to work with a forklift, we would work on movement to help that patient pull them self into and out of a forklift.)
