What kind of doctor is an internal medicine physician?
An internal medicine physician has special training on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Sometimes referred to as a “doctor’s doctor,” the internist often serves as a consultant to other physicians on complex diagnostic problems.

What does it mean to be board certified?
A physician who is board certified in internal medicine has met training and education requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine, recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and American Medical Association. The physician must present evidence of licensure and scope of practice and pass an exam every 10 years.

Do I need a referral to see an internist?
No. Call (864) 227-1115 for an appointment. Internal medicine physicians are considered primary care physicians for adults, so referrals from other doctors are not required.

Internal Medicine of the Piedmont is a group of board-certified internal medicine physicians who specialize in treating adult patients. Our goal is to help patients improve their quality of life. Areas of expertise include:

Internal medicine physicians are specially trained to care for adult patients and the complex illnesses and chronic health conditions that are more common in adults. They treat diseases of the heart, lungs, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, blood, and nervous system.

In addition to treating adults with specific disorders, our physicians see patients for general health and wellness – including preventive medicine such as routine physical exams – or for the treatment of common illnesses such as cold or flu.
